Leads Control Engineer

Job Description

The Lead Controls Engineer is the technical architect and authority for the “brain” of the data center. In this role, you are responsible for the design, programming, and integration of the Building Management System (BMS) and Electrical Power Monitoring System (EPMS). Your mission is to ensure that the automation layer seamlessly coordinates the power and cooling infrastructure to maintain 100% uptime. You lead the development of complex control sequences—such as automatic failovers, chiller plant optimization, and load shedding—ensuring they are resilient, secure, and scalable.

Key Responsibilities

  • Automation Strategy & Design: Take technical ownership of the Control Sequence of Operations (SOO) for all MEP systems, ensuring logic is robust enough to handle any equipment failure.
  • System Integration: Lead the integration of disparate vendor systems (UPS, Chillers, Fire Alarm) using protocols like BACnet, Modbus, and SNMP into a unified, high-visibility dashboard.
  • PLC & HMI Development: Oversee the programming of Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) and the design of Human Machine Interfaces (HMIs) for intuitive, real-time facility monitoring.
  • EPMS Expertise: Direct the configuration of high-speed power monitoring systems to capture electrical transients and provide detailed forensic data during power events.
  • Cybersecurity Compliance: Ensure all industrial control systems (ICS) are hardened against external threats, following ISO 27001 or SOC2 security standards.
  • Commissioning Leadership: Direct Level 4 (Functional Performance) and Level 5 (Integrated Systems) testing to validate that automation logic performs exactly as designed during “black-site” simulations.
  • Vendor Management: Lead specialized automation contractors and system integrators, ensuring their code and hardware installations meet hyperscale quality standards.

Required Qualifications and Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Mechanical, or Mechatronics Engineering.
  • 10+ years in industrial automation or controls, with at least 5 years in Data Center BMS/EPMS environments.
  • Expert-level knowledge of Tridium Niagara, Schneider EcoStruxure, or Siemens Desigo platforms.
  • Deep understanding of industrial networking, fiber topologies, and communication protocols (BACnet/IP, Modbus TCP/RTU).
  • Proficiency in Logic Pro, Function Block, or Structured Text programming for PLCs.
  • Familiarity with ISA-95/ISA-88 standards and Uptime Institute requirements for automation redundancy.
